How To Go Started with Animation?

The manner animation works, is information technology is a giant stack of drawings.

Each drawing with the character or object slightly different than the drawing before it.

A lot of drawings end up looking like other drawings.

When this stack of drawings is played in sequence at a certain speed, usually 24 frames per second, it will appear as if it is moving!

Stick Figure Flip Book

One of my old flipbooks. Age: 11

I wish I would've had The Animator'south Survival Kit every bit a kid! Information technology is an invaluable resource to have at your desk to reference constantly while solving bug in your animation that the internet cannot supervene upon.

The Animator's Survival Kit goes over everything:

  • How To Breathing Mouths
  • How To Breathing Walk Cycles
  • The 12 Principles of Blitheness

How To Animate on the Computer?

While you can use a mouse to draw, it is not recommended. Not only is it difficult, but it can injure your wrist and crusade carpal tunnel syndrome. Instead, I would recommend a drawing tablet to learn how to animate in Krita:

Here is a inexpensive, but good, drawing tablet I would recommend!

What if I want to depict on a screen, and see where I'm drawing?

Good point!

If you tin can beget it, cartoon on the screen will be much easier to learn than a tablet because you can meet where you're cartoon. With a regular tablet, information technology took me nearly iii months to go used to the hand-centre coordination. Wacom Cintiqs are a good alternative.

With a drawing monitor, you tin can draw on it like paper! Most professionals and animation studios utilise Wacom Cintiqs as their drawing monitors considering they are high-quality, take several additional features, and take the most supported tablet drivers for different programs… merely, they come with a HUGE price tag!

So what if I can't afford a Cintiq?

Fortunately, there are plenty of cheaper, just still good, drawing monitors out there!

Hither are some drawing tablet monitors I would recommend:

One thing to annotation, with these off-brand tablets, compatibility can be an issue, and driver installation tin can be a pain, only once you lot have it set, these cheap drawing monitors will offer basically the aforementioned functionality and drawing ability of a Wacom Cintiq for a fraction of the cost!

I had my off-make Yiynova MSP19U+ for about two years with no problems, and loved information technology!

Hither is what I'thou currently using in my work:

What program should I utilise?

This is a very common question. Truth is, it doesn't thing. No animation program is perfect. I personally apply Toon Boom Harmony Premium 14, but it is very expensive considering information technology is a professional person animation plan.

For beginners, I would recommend Krita. I find it the most beginner-friendly free animation program. OpenToonz is another bang-up costless alternative, but tin be complicated to larn!

First, Set Upwardly

Earlier nosotros can begin animating, we demand to catch the right panels.

If yous ever need to reset your workspace to default, go to Window > Workspace > Default.

  • Timeline
  • Onion Pare
  • Animation

These new windows will allow us to start animating! To move your windows, elevate the name of the window to where you want it

You tin drag windows on acme of each other to create tabs!

When yous take your layout the way y'all want it, you can save it past going to Window > Workspace > New Workspace…

I prefer to have my Timeline on the bottom of my screen since I need the horizontal space:

Right-Click, Create New Frame

Ane important thing to annotation, Earlier YOU Practice ANYTHING ELSE , you demand to Right-Click the kickoff frame on the Timeline and select "New Frame" to outset an animation/cartoon.

If y'all already have artwork on this layer, this volition erase your artwork, and you'll have to copy/paste/merge it dorsum in.

And so… always start with Right-Click, New Frame.

You'll notice a new Calorie-free Seedling symbol next to the Layer Proper noun, too every bit a Lock, and Visibility toggle for that layer.

Describe your first frame in your animation! Start with something piece of cake. Practice the basics until yous don't have to retrieve nigh them anymore! A billowy ball is a dandy place to first.

Your Second Frame

On the 2nd frame of your timeline, Right-Click and select New Frame.

If you have this button turned on, (Car Frame Mode, located in the Animation window,) you can go to any blank frame, start cartoon, and it will create a new frame for you!

You can also press delete to create a new blank frame this fashion…

Onion Skinning

In gild to breathing, we must be able to see the frame before, so we can see where our graphic symbol or object is going to become.

To adjust how many frames earlier and later y'all see, as well equally color tinting, you lot can adjust these in the Onion Peel window.

Turn on and off onion skin frames by selecting the numbers on the top.

Adjust the opacity of the onion skins by dragging the vertical columns.

First Animative!

Use the onion peel and start animative by moving your cartoon little past trivial with each new frame. Animation is a deadening procedure, and it takes a long time… But there is cipher quite equally satisfying as seeing something you made come up to life right in front of y'all!

Keep on Animative!

Animation is a lifelong learning procedure and one where there is always something new to learn. This is what makes animation then frustrating at times, and then rewarding at others with all yous get to learn. An animator is an role player, ready designer, choreographer, cinematographer, historian, director, etc… etc…

Because of this, we are all learning, at that place will always be those better than us, and those worse than united states. It is up to us to not feel jealous but tolarn and study from those better than us, and encourage those that have all the same to learn what you know. Ask questions! Give feedback! The thing I like well-nigh about the animation community, is nosotros are all supportive of each other! We want each other to succeed!

So go along trying!!
